Thomas Tuchel named one of the most contentious England squads in memory — Phil Foden, Cole Palmer, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Harry Maguire and Luke Shaw all miss out, while Ivan Toney earns a shock recall. Harry Kane captains the side; Jude Bellingham and Noni Madueke make the cut.
The cuts read like a fantasy do-not-pick list. Foden and Palmer, two of the Premier League's most gifted creators, both pay for fragmented, injury-shortened club seasons; Alexander-Arnold goes after a year barely featuring at Real Madrid.
Tuchel did not pretend it was painless — by his own account the phone calls were among the hardest of his tenure — but the logic was positional as much as personal: he refused to carry five No. 10s and ask them to play out of role. Toney's recall, his first England involvement since moving to Saudi Arabia, is the upside surprise, with John Stones, Madueke and Ollie Watkins also in. Kane wears the armband; Bellingham is the creative axis.
Leave this much talent at home and you had better be right. England open against Croatia in Texas with the smallest margin for error of any favourite.
We flagged Palmer's selection risk weeks ago in our Captain's Call fade, and the squad-reveal calendar marked this as the date to watch. Whether the gamble is courage or hubris is our Press Box verdict; the fantasy fallout is in England after the cuts.
